COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Robert (Bob) Wayne Steranka, a distinguished veteran and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at his residence in Cookeville, Tennessee. Born on June 5, 1939, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Bob dedicated much of his life to service and to his loved ones, leaving a lasting legacy marked by devotion, generosity, and skilled craftsmanship.
Bob's career was marked by an extraordinary 39 years of unwavering commitment to the United States Marine Corps and public service. He proudly served 20 years on active duty, including as a Vietnam War veteran, before continuing for an additional 19 years in civilian roles connected to the Corps. His identity as a Marine was not only a career but a profound part of who he was—a die-hard Marine through and through.
Beyond his military service, Robert was a master gunsmith, well known and respected for his expertise and dedication. He formerly owned and operated “Bob’s House of Guns” in Albany, Georgia, before moving to the Tennessee mountains. Once in Tennessee, he reopened a repair shop, “Hickory Haven,” where he specialized in weapon repairs. He could repair just about any weapon; it was truly a labor of love.
Those who knew Bob remember him as loving and caring, with a genuine heart. He cherished his role as a family man, delighting in spoiling the women in his life—his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren. His generosity was matched by his sincere nature, making him a source of kindness and warmth throughout his community and family.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Marcia Steranka; sons Robbie (Leah) Reed, Michael Reed, and Phillip (Melissa) Reed; brother Alan Shaffer; and two sisters, Dottie (Howard) Kobayoshi and Judy (Ron) Franklin. He was a doting grandfather to Summer (Aaron) Stauffer, Mackenzie (Cole) Adams, Tyler Reed, Amelia Reed, and Callie Reed, and a proud great-grandfather to Hawk Knight.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Steranka and Emma Steranka Underwood; his daughter, Michele Knight; his son, Wayne Steranka; his sister, Joan Ichtertz; and his brother, Steve Shaffer.
A memorial service celebrating Bob's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, at the Monterey Church of the Nazarene. Rev. Kevin Thomas will officiate. Attendees are encouraged to wear something patriotic in honor of Bob.
Robert Wayne Steranka’s life was defined by his steadfast commitment to his country, his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his exceptional craftsmanship, and his boundless love for his family. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of the Nazarene Roof Fund, 110 N. Poplar St., Monterey, TN 38574.
