COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Shirley Mae Lunsford, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, departed this life on September 26, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on August 15, 1938, in Stotesbury, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Joseph William Mullens and Stella Mae Darnell Mullens.
Shirley dedicated much of her life to her career as a bookkeeper, where her strong work ethic and unwavering dedication were evident. Yet, beyond her professional accomplishments, it was her role as an incredible mother that defined her. She raised her children, imparting invaluable lessons about devotion and love. Cherished as an amazing mother, she showed her family what it meant to be a devoted wife and mother, embodying kindness and strength at every turn. Her personality was characterized by a patient demeanor and an infectious smile that could brighten even the gloomiest of days. A true prayer warrior, she inspired those around her with her unwavering faith and resilience.
Shirley was married to her devoted husband Rex Lunsford for 48 years until his passing. Together, they built a loving family, instilling values of hard work and compassion. Shirley found joy surrounded by her family. She is survived by her 3 children. Her son, Darryl and his wife Tammy of White Lake, Michigan, her daughter Cheryl and her husband Barry of Cleveland, Tennessee, and her daughter Charlotte and her husband Dan of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Shirley also took great joy in her grandchildren, including Stephanie Lunsford, Samantha (Drew) Talbot, Sabrina Lunsford, Sierra Lunsford, Jenna (Spencer) Ferguson, Caleb Janzen, Noelle Janzen, Tyler Rex Patrick, and Zachary Patrick; as well as great-grandchildren Emery Talbot, Sawyer Talbot, and Parker Talbot.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Rex Lunsford; her sister, Sonny Texas Mullens; and her parents. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her and will leave a lasting legacy of love and strength in the hearts of her family. As we reflect on Shirley's life, may we remember her for the love she shared, the lessons she taught, and the beautiful legacy she leaves behind.
Funeral services to honor Shirley's life will take place at Cookeville Chapel in Cookeville, Tennessee. A visitation will be held on October 14, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and again on October 15, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at West Cemetery in Cookeville, Tennessee.
