MONTEREY-Stephen Nelson Eckert, a devoted husband and beloved family man, passed away on October 1, 2024, at WyndRidge Health & Rehabilitation in Crossville, Tennessee. He was born on April 19, 1942, in Newark, New Jersey, and lived a life marked by dedication, love, and an unmistakable sense of humor.

Stephen spent many years residing in Jackson, NJ, creating memories with his family before moving to New Hampshire for a time. In his later years, he embraced life in Monterey, TN, where he enjoyed the comforts of community and church. He was a cherished member of the Cookeville Seventh Day Adventist Church, fostering connections that highlighted his caring and considerate nature.

Stephen enjoyed a fulfilling career as a draft designer before retiring. He was a proud veteran who served in the United States Air Force, an experience that shaped his character and values. Throughout his life, Stephen was known for being a caring and considerate individual, always putting his loved ones first. His quirky sense of humor brought joy and laughter to those around him, leaving a lasting impression on family and friends.

He had many passions, particularly enjoying time spent outdoors. Stephen found solace in working with his tractor and took great pride in tending to his fruit trees and grapevines. He also demonstrated remarkable skill and determination when he remolded his own house, which became a testament to his creative spirit and work ethic.

Stephen is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Audrey Overbaugh Eckert; his sons, Glenn Eckert (Katie) and Kirk Eckert; his brother, David Eckert (Doris); as well as his cherished grandchildren, Kaylee Coryell (Kyle), Alex Eckert, Stephen Eckert, Emily Johnson (Chris) and Esme' Humpirey (TJ). He was also a proud great-grandfather to Elias, Silas, Tyrian and Atlas, and is remembered fondly by several nieces and nephews who will miss his presence dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter Eckert and Clara Settele Eckert, and his brother, Allan Eckert.

A funeral service honoring Stephen will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday October 8 at Horner Funeral Home, located at 203 South Holly Street, Monterey, TN. Visitation with family and friends will be from 4-6 p.m. prior to the funeral on Tuesday. Stephen will be laid to rest with military honors on Wednesday October 9 at 12:30 PM at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, located at 2200 E Governor John Sevier Hwy, Knoxville, TN.
