Thelma Irene Poteet, a beacon of love and selflessness, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2024, at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro, TN. Born on May 7, 1940, in Atlanta, GA, Thelma's life was a testament to the power of kindness, a warm smile, and unwavering faith.


Thelma was the cherished matriarch of a large and loving family. She is survived by her devoted sons, Michael Poteet and his wife Christina, Randall Poteet, and Gregory Poteet and his wife Beth; her daughter Linda Irene Hill, along with her husband David. Thelma's legacy continues through the lives of her numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all of whom she loved with her whole heart.


Before her passing, Thelma was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Harley Leo Ballew and Ruby Pearl Brookshire; her husband of 58 years, Delmer Ray “Doc” Poteet; and her siblings, Mary Frances Thrash, Louise Gaylor-Brown, Thomas James Ballew, Grady Lee Ballew, and Harley Leo Ballew Jr. Each of them held a special place in her heart, and her memories with them were cherished until her last moments.


Thelma's career was marked by her dedication and hard work at Cumberland Swan in Smyrna, TN, from which she retired after many years of service.


Those who knew Thelma will fondly remember her for putting others before herself, always ready to lend a hand or offer a word of encouragement. Her great smile and laughter were infectious, and her presence brought joy to every room. Thelma's most beautiful and warming green eyes reflected the love and compassion she felt for everyone she met. Above all, she was a God-fearing woman who lived her faith through her actions every day.


Thelma's interests were simple yet profound. She adored her grandchildren and cherished every moment spent with them. She was a woman of great strength and character, whose impact on those around her will be felt for generations to come. Thelma's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of devotion, care, and unwavering love.


The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in honoring Thelma's life on Thursday, June 20, at 1 pm at Horner Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 11 am until the time of service. Following the funeral, Thelma will be laid to rest at Sand Springs Memorial Gardens, where she will be surrounded by the beauty of nature that she so loved.
