COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Thomas Richard Nelson, beloved husband, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Cookeville, TN, on Friday July 17, 2026. Born on December 10, 1949, in San Francisco, CA, Thomas lived a meaningful life, marked by dedication to his faith, service to his country, and passion for his many interests.

Tom grew up in Marin, California, with his parents, Rudolph Nelson and Nora Lebedoff, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by his brother, Robert Nelson.

A proud veteran, Tom served his country honorably during the Vietnam War as a helicopter mechanic with the US Army. His skills, professionalism, and steady presence left a lasting impact on those who served alongside him.

After his military service, Tom followed his passion for craftsmanship and autos, becoming self-employed as a painting contractor and finish woodworker-a career that showcased his steady hand and meticulous attention to detail. Additionally, Thomas worked as a Mercedes mechanic, demonstrating keen technical expertise.

Outside of work, Tom was a man of wide-ranging curiosity and cheerful enthusiasm. Tom loved studying the Bible and spending time with God. He remained deeply interested in current events, always eager to learn and discuss the issues of the day. A lifelong student of history, he delighted in sharing stories and lessons from the past, believing that understanding the world’s events could help guide the present.

Traveling excited Tom, giving him the chance to explore new places. He loved hiking trails that brought him close to nature and was known for his adventurous spirit-never shying away from a ziplining challenge for the thrill of a new perspective.

Tom attended River Community Church, and he cherished the fellowship and spiritual community he found there. His faith provided him strength, and his warmth and kindness touched all who knew him within the congregation.

Tom's greatest joy was found in the company of family and friends. He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia Nelson, who stood by his side through the many chapters of their life together. He is also survived by his brother Barry Nelson and his sister Donna Myers, both of whom shared enduring bonds of love and support. Thomas leaves behind four beloved grandchildren-Kaylee, Kristine, Kandice, and Gracie-who will remember him for his stories, humor, and gentle kindness.

He will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, his boundless curiosity, and his deep commitment to those he loved. Tom leaves behind a legacy defined by service, dedication, and kindness-qualities that will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.

A private celebration of life will take place at a later date.
