Wilma Jean Rice

DYER CHAPEL - Wilma Jean Rice, a cherished homemaker and beloved matriarch, passed away on Tuesday May 13, 2025, at her residence in Cookeville, TN. Born on June 2, 1939, in White County, TN, Jean filled her years with love, creativity, and a profound devotion to her family.

Jean had an extraordinary talent for nurturing her loved ones, always embodying a sweet and loving spirit that endeared her to many. She found immense joy in her grandchildren and took great pride in her role as a grandmother. Her legacy lives on in her children-Beverly Mitchell (Ted), Lonnie Rice (Lisa), and Jack Rice (Gail)-who carry forward her warmth and nurturing spirit.

A versatile and skilled individual, Jean pursued various hobbies that showcased her immense talents. She loved to dance, delighting in the joy of square dancing and clogging. Her hands were never idle; she was an accomplished seamstress, and her skills in crochet and knitting were a testament to her creativity. There was seemingly nothing beyond her capabilities when it came to crafting and creating.

Along with her children, Jean is survived by her brother, Lynn Sliger (Arlena), as well as grandchildren Kelly Mulholland (Jimmy), Chad Rice, Tyler Rice (Rachel), and Leanne Nabors (Brandon), grand-daughter-in-law, Lauren Rice, and her great-grandchildren, Tanner and Ajay Murphy, Allie and Brooks Nabors, Layna, Gavin, Cannan, and Maren Rice, and the soon-to-arrive Isla Rae Nabors.

Jean was preceded in death by parents, Joseph Sliger and Nettie Myrtle Tollison Sliger, her husband, A.J. Rice, grandson, Landon Rice, sisters, Mae Sliger, Ola Guinn, Jane Cummings, Doris Loftis, Mary Allison, Shirley Massa, Lovie Spivey, and Plina Wilson, and brothers, Sam, Hugh, Bill, Charlie, Willard, and Elbert Sliger.

A graveside service honoring Jean will be Thursday May 15 at 10 a.m. at Allison Cemetery. Bro Jack Honeycutt will officiate.
